NEW ORLEANS - Southern Miss defeated the University of New Orleans
women's tennis team 4-2 on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis
Center.
USM (9-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the dual by claiming the doubles' point. The Golden Eagles won the top two doubles' matches against UNO (5-9) before
Sofija Karalic and
Kristina Martic prevailed 8-6 over Shannon Rogers and Zoe Lee at the No. 3 position.
As play turned to singles, USM went up 2-0 after
Amber Garza retired at the No. 4 position to Lauren Gutterman after dropping the first set 6-0.
UNO would post two straight set wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions as
Ceara Howey and Karalic posted wins. Howey was a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lee at No. 5 with Karalic winning 6-1, 6-4 over Rogers at No. 6.
The Golden Eagles would claim the other two singles' matches, with Vroni van Berlo winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 over
Cassandra Escobar and her sister, Elia, defeating
Kristina Martic 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.
In the one match that did not finish,
Kozue Matsumoto was ahead 4-1 in the second set against Stephanie Dellocono, after dropping the first set 6-4 at No. 2.
The Privateer women will head to Lafayette on Apr. 3 for a 2 p.m. dual against Louisiana-Lafayette.
