NEW ORLEANS - In a match that finished late Monday night, Lamar defeated the University of New Orleans men's tennis team by a 4-2 result at the Hilton Riverside Hotel.
The match, which was originally started on Monday afternoon at the University Tennis Center, was moved indoors to the Hilton Riverside due to rain. When the match resumed, Lamar (7-2) took the first two wins over UNO (1-6) to claim the doubles' point.
Making their debut as a duo, Stepan Siska and Guilherme Rebolo fell 8-5 at No. 1 to Robert Lee and Denis Ermilov. Diego Snyder and Richard Fikuka closed out the doubles' point with an 8-5 win at the No. 3 court over Rohit Chivukula and Abdelrahman Zaki. In the other match that was not finished, Benjamin Bouhana and Ben Smith, playing together for the first time since a Sept. 09 loss to UAB, were ahead 7-4 at No. 2 against Marton Horvath and James Thorp.
In singles play, the competition was close after LU's Snyder and Filkuka were both straight set winners. Snyder defeated Chivukula 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 with Filkuka defeating Bouhanana 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. The remaining matches were close.
Siska and Rebolo posted wins for the Privateers with victories at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Siska claimed a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Lee while Rebolo came back from a set down to defeat Dusan Sakovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The clincher for LU went to Ermilov, who was a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 winner over Smith at No. 3, rallying from a set down to pick up the victory.
UNO will seek to end their four-match losing streak on Saturday when Prairie View A&M visits the UTC at 2 p.m.
