Privateers Fall to Stephen F. Austin

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (6-17, 0-9 Southland) were controlled by a strong offensive attack in a 3-0 loss (25-12, 25-15, 25-11) to the Stephen F. Austin LadyJacks (15-7, 8-0) at Shelton Gym on Saturday.

Stephen F. Austin got out to a fast start to set the tone in the match. The LadyJacks recorded 16 kills in 24 swings and had an attack percentage of .667. The Privateers managed to keep within earshot of the lead, trailing 13-9 after a Taylor Berry kill, but Stephen F. Austin finished off the set with a 12-3 run.

New Orleans turned the tables in the early going of the second set, collecting the first three points. However, the LadyJacks settled in and scored nine of the next 10 points to take control of the set. Stephen F. Austin had two blocks in that span and 10 total blocks in the match.

The third set began with the home-standing LadyJacks racing out to an 8-1 lead. The Privateers could get the deficit no closer than four. Stephen F. Austin hit .487 on the match with 43 kills and just six errors in 76 attempts compared to an .033 hitting percentage for the Privateers.

The Privateers were led offensively by Cara Sander who had eight kills. Mikayla Sellers-Wiebe added five kills and Taylor Berry had four kills in 11 attempts. Berry and Brooklyn Frank combined on both blocks for New Orleans on the match. Defensively, Sellers-Wiebe and Lauren Levy each had five digs.

Justice Walker had the highest kill total with 12 kills in just 16 attempts. Jilly Ivy wound up with nine kills and Abby McIntyre added six. The LadyJacks had eight service aces, including three from Tori Bates. Stephen F. Austin was led in digs by OJ Olson who had 15.

The Privateers will return home to take on Abilene Christian on Oct. 23. First serve is for 6:30 p.m.
