Privateers Stymied in 3-0 Loss to Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (6-21, 0-13 Southland) was held to 17 kills on the match in a 3-0 loss (25-11, 25-13, 25-11) to the Nicholls Colonels (9-16, 5-7) on Saturday at Stopher Gym.

The Colonels earned the first three rallies via a block, a kill, and an attack error. The teams split the next 10 rallies down the middle, but Nicholls steadily pulled away, going on a 5-0 run while leading by three. Nicholls overcame three service errors during the opening set.

New Orleans had a tough time gaining any momentum on the afternoon. In the second set, the Privateers fell into an early 5-2 hole. After stemming the tide, the Privateers then conceded an 8-0 run that pushed the Colonels' set advantage to 17-6.

In the third and final set, the Privateers were on the wrong end of a 10-0 run that broke a 4-4 tie. It was the Colonels' most efficient set on the attack in the match. Nicholls hit .522 in the third set with 12 kills and no errors in 23 attempts.

Mikayla Sellers-Wiebe and Cara Sander combined for 12 kills, registering six each. Rondolyn Bryant had three kills and a block assist. Sara Hammoutene was in on two blocks (one solo, one assist) and Lauren Levy tallied 11 digs.

The Colonels were led by Kaci Eaton who notched 10 kills. Stephanie Tobison added seven kills and Kali Schwartz added six kills. Nicholls hit .383 on the match with just seven errors in 81 attacks. Kalynn Egea led the way defensively with 17 digs and Schwartz followed with 10 digs.

New Orleans will next travel to Beaumont, Texas to face the Lamar Cardinals on Thursday, Nov. 6.
