Privateers Start Fast in Win Over Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (6-11, 0-4 Southland) used an outstanding first set to vault to a 3-0 win (25-11, 25-20, 26-24) against the Alcorn State Lady Braves (4-9, 0-0 SWAC) on Tuesday night at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

The Privateers controlled the first set behind a .519 hitting percentage. In 27 attacks in the opening set, New Orleans had 14 kills and no errors. Meanwhile defensively, Alcorn State was held to just a .103 hitting percentage with 11 kills and seven errors in 39 swings.

The next two sets were tightly contested, but New Orleans was able to take both behind a balanced attack. New Orleans hit .295 on the night, the highest team hitting percentage since the home opener against Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 2.

New Orleans had to go extra rallies to decide the third and final set. It was the seventh time this season the Privateers went to extra rallies in a set, and New Orleans has taken three of those seven sets. With the win, New Orleans has now moved to 10-0 all-time against Alcorn State with two of those victories coming this season.

Taylor Berry had an efficient night to lead the attack with seven kills in nine attempts. Kelsea Hundtoft and Rondolyn Bryant each added six kills. Bryant also added to her growing block total with five total blocks (four solo). Cara Sander and Celeste Ramirez each went for double-digit digs, notching 12 and 10 respectively.

Heather Jackson paced the Lady Braves' attack with 13 kills and a .440 hitting percentage in 25 attempts. Erica Caddell added eight kills and Lurlethia Jones contributed six. Vanessa Ortega led the way in digs with 14.

New Orleans returns home and to conference play with the second meeting against the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears on Thursday, Oct. 2.. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
