THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (2-15, 0-8) were unable to convert consistently on second chance opportunities in a 56-40 loss to the Nicholls Colonels (9-10, 5-3) on Thursday at Stopher Gym.
New Orleans got the first bucket of the second half to cut the deficit down to six, but a quick seven point spurt put the Colonels lead back into double figures. The Colonels continued to grow their lead using solid production from the bench to help set the tone. New Orleans had 17 offensive rebounds, but only six second chance points.
The Privateers got their first lead at 6-4 when
Yasmin Taylor hit a pair of free throws at the 17:01 mark of the first half. Nicholls tied the game just before the media timeout and both teams went on a dry spell from the floor.
Neither team scored for the next six minutes until the drought was broken on a layup by the Colonels. Nicholls gradually increased their advantage from that point, leading by as many as 12 at one point in the first half. The Privateers fought back to cut it to 28-20 at the break, but had a floater waved off just before the horn on a charge.
The Privateers were led by Taylor who had eight points while also chipping in four rebounds.
Jewel Angelo and
Kayla Mundy had six points each. BrIAnna Shavers had all five of her points at the free throw line. New Orleans was held to 26 percent from the field (13-for-50).
Nicholls was led by Jenny Nash who had 12 points, six rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Emani White had 12 of the Colonels' 28 points from the bench and Shay Arnick added nine points. The Colonels were 5-for-11 from three-point range in the second half.
New Orleans will next travel to McNeese State on Saturday. Tip is slated for 4 p.m.Â
