CONWAY, Ark. – The New Orleans Privateers (8-9, 0-3) held the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears (8-9, 4-1) to their lowest attack percentage in their last seven matches, but fell 3-1 (25-18, 10-25, 25-18, 25-21) on Thursday night at the Prince Center.
Down 2-1, New Orleans came out with four straight points after Central Arkansas opened the set by winning a long rally. However, the lead was short lived as the Sugar Bears strung together four straight points to take an 8-6 lead. Central Arkansas steadily inched away to an 18-11 lead, but the Privateers had one more rally.
New Orleans cut the deficit back down to two. Trailing 21-19, the Privateers conceded the next three points. After staving off match point twice, the Sugar Bears finished the job getting the third kill of the night from Savannah Allen. The Sugar Bears overcame 12 service errors and an attack percentage of .164 to polish off the win.
The Privateers fell behind 6-3 out of the gate, but earned serve back on a bad set by Central Arkansas. Then
Blessing Dunn helped key a 7-0 run with two service aces to vault the Privateers to a four-point lead. Central Arkansas responded with an 8-1 spurt of their own to re-take the lead and push it to three points when the Privateers called their final timeout of the set.
The Sugar Bears slowly pulled away from there, building a lead as large as eight. Central Arkansas opened the match recording a .333 attack percentage in the first set and also had three blocks at the net.
New Orleans started the second set by again building an early four-point lead. New Orleans was ahead 9-5 when Central Arkansas called their first timeout of the set. The stoppage did little to stop the Privateers' momentum as they used a 7-0 run to build the lead to double figures. The Privateers had six total blocks in the set.
Central Arkansas ran out to a 6-2 lead to start the third set. The Privateers quickly erased that lead, scoring five of the next six rallies. The Sugar Bears came back with four straight points of their own, and were ahead by as many as seven points on two different occasions.
On the night,
Lauren Levy set a new season high with 16 digs. Offensively, Dunn and
Samantha Uline had eight kills each.
Takierra Boughton added six kills while
Rondolyn Bryant posted five kills. Boughton and Bryant were both big factors at the net, factoring in seven of the team's nine blocks.
Kaitlyn Grice also had four total blocks (all assist).
Celeste Ramirez had her second consecutive double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs.
Central Arkansas was paced by Heather Schnars who racked up a season-best 24 kills. Rachel Sharp added eight kills and Fulani Petties had six kills. Amy South recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs. Corri Hunt and Allie Kemp co-led the Sugar Bears with 14 digs each. Central Arkansas had 11 more kills than the Privateers on the evening.
The five-match road swing ends on Tuesday, Oct. 6 when New Orleans travels to Nicholls. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
