Privateers Sweep Southeastern in Three Tightly Contested Sets

Kaitlyn Grice Leads Strong Blocking Effort With Six Blocks

NEW ORLEANS, La.
– The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (11-9, 2-3) used a strong blocking presence with 11 total blocks in a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) over the Southeastern Lady Lions (8-11, 2-3) on Saturday at the Human Performance Center.
 
In a set that featured 13 ties and four lead changes, the Privateers were able to close each set out in their favor on a comprehensive effort. Takierra Boughton ended the match with her sixth kill. The match in total featured 28 ties and 11 changes.
 
New Orleans hit .258 for the match while recording five service aces. Kaitlyn Grice had six blocks (three solo, three assist) as the Privateers finished off a 3-0 week that included wins over Nicholls and Southern.
 
The Privateers raced out to an early 8-4 lead, but that advantage was quickly erased after Southeastern scored the next four points. Neither team had a lead bigger than the final margin of the set, which was capped when Sara Hammoutene and Kaitlyn Grice combined for a tandem block. The Privateers had three blocks in the opening set.
 
New Orleans earned three of their first four points of the second set on blocks to help set the tone. The Privateers got the lead up to as much as six, but Southeastern got three kills from Parrie Hartley as part of a 10-3 run to put Southeastern in front 22-21. The Privateers rallied back behind two kills, an ace, and a tandem block which sent New Orleans to the half with a 2-0 lead.  
 
Cara Sander led the team in kills with 10 and hit .321. Blessing Dunn added seven kills and six digs. Boughton wound up two blocks (both assist) on top of her six kills. Lauren Levy had nine digs while Shaylene Reimer added six digs. Sara Hammoutene had 19 assists and Celeste Ramirez finished with 13 assists.
 
Southeastern was led by Parrie Hartley's 12 kills and Landry Bullock who contributed 11 kills. Sarah Friedman added seven kills. Southeastern had two service aces, both coming from Monica Ramon who also led the team in digs with 13. Veronica Turk had five of the team's seven blocks (two solo, three assist).
 
The Privateers will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 15 against Northwestern State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
