NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (1-1) controlled the boards throughout the night and built a 14-point first quarter lead on their way to a 93-75 win over the LSU-Alexandria Generals on Thursday at the Lakefront Arena.
Randi Brown helped ensure the Privateers walked away victors in their home opener. After a lead as large as 17 was cut to nine at the end of three quarters, Brown turned up the scoring with seven points in the first 3:34 of the final quarter to push the lead to 80-66.
New Orleans set sail for the remainder of the contest while hauling in 61 rebounds. Their rebounding margin of +30 was the fourth-widest in program history and the Privateers also had 17 more offensive boards on the evening.
The Privateers quickly put the clamps down defensively after allowing back-to-back triples in the first minute and trailing 7-2. LSU-Alexandria was held without a point for near six minutes of game time while the Privateers spurted to the front and quickly put some distance on their lead. After a quarter, New Orleans led 30-16 while shooting 52 percent from the field (13-for-25).
New Orleans used their size advantage to help dominate on the glass in the first half. At the break, the Privateers held a 28-15 edge in the rebounding department. The Privateers also distributed the ball well to start, notching 14 assists on 19 made field goals. The lead stayed in double figures throughout the second quarter and the Privateers led 48-36 at the half.
LSU-Alexandria started to tighten things up in the third quarter, getting to the free throw line more often. The Generals had 10 free throw trips in the third, contrasted with eight attempts from the charity stripe in the entire first half. The Privateers lead shrunk to as little as seven and was nine when the third stanza finished.
Brown went for 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Bria Platenburg had a very efficient first half and wound up with 19 points on 9-of-12 from the field.
Shania Woods landed just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. As a team, the Privateers dished out 27 assists on 38 field goals. Individually, Brown, Platenburg, and
Danielle Davis had five assists each while
Mariah Wright dished out four.
LSU-Alexandria was led by Taylor Maricle who went off for 30 points. Maricle also led the team in assists (six) and steals (five) while co-leading the squad in rebounds with six. Pearl Paulo added 16 points and pulled in six rebounds. Taylor Holzmeier had eight points and Jena Mabile added six. The Generals connected on 50 percent of their three-pointers for the game.
The Privateers will hit the road next to take on Iowa State on Sunday. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
