NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (3-3) outpaced Jackson State (4-3) in the second half on their way to an 85-68 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Lakefront Arena.

The Privateers broke open a close game in the third quarter, outscoring Jackson State by 11 after entering the half leading by just two. In the quarter, New Orleans had 10 offensive boards to just two for the Lady Tigers. New Orleans also shot 50 percent for the second half (18-of-36).

The Privateers also had 39 trips to the free throw line in the game and turned 26 Jackson State turnovers into 32 points. Â On the scoreboard, New Orleans had a 46-31 advantage over the Lady Tigers. The win moved New Orleans to 3-0 at home for the season.

The opening stanza featured 46 points between both teams and 24 trips to the free throw line. Jackson State scored the first five points of the contest before the Privateers got on the board with a
Randi Brown layup.

New Orleans was trailing for most of the first quarter and saw a deficit as large as nine. However, the Privateers used the free throw line to erase that deficit. The Privateers had 15 free throw trips in the first quarter and both teams were tied at 23-23.

Jackson State took advantage of an early second quarter drought by the Privateers who did not score for the first three minutes. The Lady Tigers opened up with a 7-0 run, but New Orleans came back strong after a timeout with five quick points. New Orleans eventually wrestled the lead back on a triple by Brown who scored 14 points in the first half and the Privateers went to the locker room leading 39-37.

Four players scored in double figures including Brown who had 21 points.
Kayla Mundy,
Yasmin Taylor, and
Bria Platenburg each had 12 points. Taylor added four rebounds and three steals while Mundy contributed three steals and two assists.
Shania Woods fell just short of a double-double with nine points and 11 boards.
Danielle Davis had her third game of five assists and also pulled down six boards.

Jackson State was led by Derica Wiggins' 14 points. Bridget Robinson and Krystal Nailer each added 10 points. Nyahok Bile battled through foul trouble to post nine points, five boards and three steals. Daisha Williams added seven points.

The Privateers will hit the road next to take on Ole Miss on Monday. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
