BOX SCORE (PDF)CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (3-18, 1-11) fell behind by 22 at half and lost 66-52 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (12-11, 8-4) on Thursday evening at the American Bank Center.
New Orleans came out with a strong start to the second half, cutting a 22-point halftime deficit to 11 within the first six minutes. The Privateers started the half on a 13-2 run, which was capped by a
Danielle Davis three-pointer.
Yasmin Taylor split a pair of free throws and the Privateers trailed by a dozen with 10:31 left. Then the Islanders re-extended their lead, going on a 10-1 run to push the advantage back up to 21 with just shy of six minutes remaining.
The Islanders opened up with the first seven points of the game, forcing a quick Privateers timeout. New Orleans got their first points of the game just beyond the 17-minute mark, but struggled on the glass and against the half court pressure Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used to force ten half turnovers.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went to the half with a 39-17 lead while out-rebounding the Privateers by 14. The Islanders also had 15 offensive rebounds, which turned into 12 second chance points. New Orleans found good looks at the basket difficult to come by, and only went 5-for-22 in the first half.
Randi Brown led the way for the Privateers with 17 points while shooting 6-for-15 from the field. Brown also led the team in rebounds with six.
Halie Matthews fell just shy of double figures with eight points, while
Octavia Wilson,
Kayla Mundy, and
Danielle Davis added six points each.
The Islanders had three players in double figures, led by Olivia Fouty who scored 16 points and hauled in nine boards. Kassie Jones added 11 points while Camesha Davis scored 10. Ashanti Plummer led all players in rebounds on the night with 13. The Islanders out-rebounded the Privateers 46-31 on the game.
Next up for the Privateers is a short trip to Hammond to face Southeastern on Feb. 19. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
