BOX SCORE (XML) | BOX SCORE (PDF)NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (8-11, 2-4) used a six-run inning and a masterful performance in relief by
Jordan Priddle to take an 8-3 win over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (6-15, 1-5) on Sunday at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.
Trailing 3-2 into the sixth, the Privateers started the game-winning inning by virtue of an error on Stephen F. Austin reliever, Austin Smith. After back-to-back singles loaded the bases,
Jay Robinson tied the game on an RBI sac fly. The Privateers continued to pile on as Stephen F. Austin used four different pitchers in the inning.
The Privateers went in front on an RBI infield single by
Ryan Calloway. That was followed by another RBI base knock from
Ray Veit. The scoring was capped off when
Hezekiah Randolph roped a double to left, driving in two runs. "I try to tell them it's a teaching point too. Secure the ball and it's an easy out. That was a big break for us," said Coach
Ron Maestri about the error that started the big inning.
Priddle came in after
Daniel Martinez was only able to go one inning. Priddle pitched six innings of relief, allowing just three hits with no walks while striking out six batters to pick up his fourth win of the season. "He gave us a big lift and pitched very strong. Jordan did a fantastic job," said Maestri.
The Lumberjacks got all their runs in the first, sending all nine batters to the plate. Stephen F. Austin loaded the bases with no outs and Hunter Wilson hit an RBI sac fly to punch the first run across. Conner Fikes followed shortly after with a two-run single to make it 3-0.
New Orleans got a run back in the first as Calloway scored on a wild pitch. They would add another in the fifth when Calloway scored on a
Preston Marsh RBI single to right.
Samuel Capielano also tried to score from second but was thrown out at the plate and had to come out shortly after due to injury on that play.
Calloway's three-hit performance along with three runs vaulted the Privateers' offense. Capielano went 2-for-3 before having to exit. Marsh and Randolph each drove in two runs.
Darron McKigney and
Kevin Kelleher held the Lumberjacks off the board over the final two frames to seal the Privateers' first conference series win since May 2009.
Jared Greene threw five innings and left with a lead, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out four batters. The Lumberjacks went through six different relievers over the next three innings. Kyle Thornell had two extra base hits (one double, one triple) from the nine hole.
The Privateers are back in action on Tuesday against Southern Miss. First pitch is for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
