NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (8-15, 2-7) had a late rally fall short in the first game of a doubleheader and wound up getting swept, losing by scores of 5-4 and 17-2 to the Lamar Cardinals (11-12, 3-6) on Saturday at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.

In the first game, the Privateers got on the board on a Jonathan Santana two-run single in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Lamar got both of those runs back with one scoring on a wild pitch and another on an RBI double to push the Cardinals lead back to three.

The Privateers were up against it, trailing 5-2 with two outs in the ninth. Dane Landry though came up with his first collegiate home run, a two run shot to right to cut the deficit to one. Cardinals pitcher, Derek Wade came back to record a strikeout to end the game and preserve the win while going for a three-inning save.

Lamar got out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning after back-to-back singles started the frame. Brendan Satran hit an RBI single to drive in the first run. Mason Salazar followed by reaching on a throwing error while attempting to lay down a bunt. The third run came across on a wild pitch.

In the second contest, the Privateers and Cardinals battled through three scoreless frames to start it off. The Cardinals then popped two runs across on a Kyle Markum solo home run and an RBI single by Stijn van der Meer. The Privateers got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but left the bases loaded after Galen Andrews recorded a strikeout.

Lamar's bats exploded for four more runs in the fifth, highlighted by one of two home runs from Salazar. After a three-run sixth, the Cardinals capped off a big finish at the plate with eight runs in the seventh while sending 11 batters to the plate. Salazar and Kevin Santana each had three-run homers in the inning as the Cardinals had eight extra base hits in the series finale.

Jonathan Coco went for four hits over the two contests while Matt Rykaczewski collected three hits and replaced Santana who was ejected as part of a scuffle in the first game. Rykaczewski went 2-for-3 at the plate in the second contest with a double and a run scored. Ray Veit also had three hits on the day including a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI in the series finale.

The Privateers will be back in action on Tuesday against Loyola. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
