Daniel Martinez earned his first collegiate win, pitching a complete game as the New Orleans Privateers baseball team (14-29, 3-18) coasted to a 14-3 victory over the Jackson State Tigers (28-18, 14-7) on Tuesday at Braddy Field.
Â
The Privateers fought back from an early deficit to tie the game in the fifth. After a lead-off single by
Parker Jones, New Orleans had a bunt on with
Chaz Boyer. The throw to first was wide and Boyer reached third while Jones scored to put the Privateers on the board.
Ryan Calloway followed with an RBI sac fly to tie the game.
Â
New Orleans took the lead in the sixth and never looked back. After the Privateers loaded up the bases against Theo Hassan, it got to Jones again who tripled down the left field line to put New Orleans up 5-2.
Jay Robinson then executed a squeeze play to drive in another run against Hassan who took the loss (0-1).
Â
The Privateers continued to pile onto the lead. Three runs came across in the seventh including a two-run home run by
Jonathan Santana, his second of the season. Santana wound up going 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs.
Â
Martinez gave up two early runs after a single and a walk set up a two-run single by Jovany Felipe. After that, Martinez locked in, striking out nine batters, a new career best. Martinez issued just one walk to 32 batters faced and struck out the side in the fifth. Five of the six Tigers hits on the evening came from the top three hitters in the order.
