NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (14-40, 3-27 Southland) was swept in a doubleheader on the final day of the regular season, falling by scores of 8-2 and 5-1 to the Southeastern Lions (41-15, 25-5) on Saturday at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.
Â
The Privateers' 11 seniors were honored before the day started and
Alex Smith got the start. In his first and only batter faced, Smith struck out Julian Service looking on a breaking ball that caught the inside corner. Smith was one of five senior pitchers who each got a mid-inning curtain call during the contest.
Â
A Carson Crites home run in the first gave Southeastern an early advantage, but the Privateers came right back for two runs in the bottom half of the frame. After an RBI ground out by
Sam Carriere to tie the game,
Jonathan Santana got an RBI single of his own to give New Orleans an early 2-1 lead. That was the only lead they would enjoy on the game and on the doubleheader.
Â
The Lions moved ahead on the strength of back-to-back two-out RBI singles after a two-out error continued the frame. Crites hit an RBI single and was shortly followed by a Daniel Midyett RBI single to give Southeastern a 3-2 lead. The Lions extended the advantage when Ryan Byers cranked a two-run homer in the third.
Â
Southeastern grabbed a run in each of the first five innings behind Jake Johnson who went five innings and scattered eight hits while giving up two runs. The Lions pen between Drew Avans and Mason Klotz combined to pitch four shutout frames to close the opening game of the doubleheader.
Â
The scoring started early in the second game as Crites popped another home run, his second of the day in the first inning. Byers also smashed his second homer of the day to extend the lead to 2-0 after three. Privateer starter,
Daniel Martinez only allowed one other hit in five innings pitched and struck out six.
Kevin Kelleher pitched the last four innings of the game and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five.
Â
Carriere's hitting streak ended at 16 after going 0-for-4 in the first game. Carriere collected a hit in four at-bats in the second contest.
Ryan Calloway and
Chaz Boyer each had three hits between both contests.
Samuel Capielano went 2-for-5 with a run in the first game.
Jay Robinson led the offense in the second game with two hits and a run.
Â
The Lions were led offensively by Crites who had six hits between both games and landed a double shy of the cycle in the first game. Midyett went 3-for-7 and drove in three runs. Kyle Cedotal picked up the win in the finale by throwing six shutout innings. The only run allowed by the Lions in the back end of the doubleheader was on a bases loaded walk.
