NEW ORLEANS –
Randi Brown banked in a three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left to give the New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (5-8, 2-2 Southland) a pulsating 58-57 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Lady Jacks (7-8, 1-3) on Thursday at the Lakefront Arena.
The Privateers turned it over with 6.8 seconds left and were forced to foul. New Orleans sent Taylor Schippers to the line who missed one of two free throws. Down two, the Privateers pushed the ball up the floor and after a pump fake, Brown leaned in for a last second three that banked home off the window.
"Randi remained calm and we ran off a few screens and she was able to get a few inside shots off. She has a high basketball I.Q. and she wants the ball in her hands when the game is on the line," said Coach
Keeshawn Davenport.
New Orleans led for 25 of 40 minutes, but neither team led by more than five points.
Alexis Martin split a pair of free throws to give the Privateers a one-point lead with 36 seconds left. Adrienne Lewis came back with a second chance bucket to give Stephen F. Austin the lead back.
It was a defensive battle early on as both teams forced the other into double digit turnovers in the first half. The Privateers held Stephen F. Austin to just one field goal make over the last 5:52 of the first quarter and took a narrow 12-10 lead after 10 minutes.
New Orleans led for nearly nine minutes of the second quarter, which began with a three-pointer by
Randi Brown. Stephen F. Austin quickly responded with a triple of their own from Chanell Hayes. The Privateers led by as many as four points and controlled the glass throughout the first half. At the break, the New Orleans lead was 28-25.
"We're going to keep on crashing the boards and we've got to peak at the right time. We emphasized being disciplined, dedicated, and determined. After the turnover on the baseline, they could have hung their heads, but I'll tell you the last thing we did was situational stuff. I'm proud of their effort. We have a few hours to celebrate, and then we have a very tough Houston Baptist team coming in," said Davenport.
The Privateers were ahead for most of the third quarter until a 9-0 spurt gave Stephen F. Austin their largest lead at 40-36. The Privateers came back with six straight of their own from the last possession of the third to the first two trips of the fourth to gain the lead back. The score was tied seven times in the final stanza.
Brown led all scorers with 20 points on the night and hit seven of her last nine shots.
Mathilde Fogelstrom finished with eight points and six boards while
Bria Platenburg added eight points and seven rebounds. New Orleans was 14-of-16 from the charity stripe and out-rebounded Stephen F. Austin 44-27 in the victory.
Stephen F. Austin was led by Taylor Ross who had 16 points (14 in the second half). Brentney Branch added 10 points and Lewis had eight boards. Kennedy Harris added eight points for a Stephen F. Austin squad that shot 46.4 percent in the second half, but converted on just 8-of-17 free throw attempts for the evening.
The Privateers will be back in action on Saturday against Houston Baptist. Tip is slated for 4 p.m.
