BEAUMONT, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (3-7, 0-1 Southland) was held to under 30 percent from the field in a 79-52 loss to the Lamar Cardinals (5-8, 1-1) on Monday at the Montagne Center.
The Privateers got out to a quick start, scoring the first six points of the game forcing an early Lamar timeout. After the stoppage, JaMeisha Edwards started to warm up, keying a 12-1 run, which gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the first (12-7). New Orleans battled back and recaptured the lead on a couple of occasions late in the quarter, but Edwards' third triple in the closing seconds gave Lamar a 17-15 advantage after the first quarter.
Lamar carried over the momentum from the end of the first quarter into the second as they began the quarter on a 13-1 run to grow their lead to 30-18 with 4:53 remaining. The rest of the quarter was played evenly as the Cardinals took a 37-26 lead into the break. Lamar shot 42.4 percent from the field in the first half while the Privateers were held to a 31.3 percent clip.
The second half began with another substantial run by Lamar as they out-scored the Privateers 14-5 in the first 5:01 of the third quarter. At the end of the run, the Cardinals led by a 49-31 score. Lamar hit 6-10 shots and forced four Privateer turnovers in that span.
Bria Platenburg led all Privateers with 11 points.
Randi Brown added 10 points and
Shania Woods landed just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. New Orleans out-rebounded the Cardinals 47-40 and held a 26-16 advantage on the offensive glass.
Danielle Davis had four of the team's 11 assists.
The Cardinals had a balanced effort with four players in double figures. Edwards had 18 points, three assists, and three steals. Addesha Collins led all Cardinals with 19 points. K.P. Tryon added 13 points and Laka Blache scored 12. Lamar shot 44.6 percent from the field and connected on 15-of-18 trips to the free throw line.
The Privateers will return home on Thursday to take on Incarnate Word. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
