New Orleans, Louisiana- After jumping out to an eight-point lead, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team never looked back and cruised to the club's first win of the season by a whopping 38-point margin, 75-37, over Blue Mountain (Miss.) College Tuesday at Lakefront Arena.
Â
Everyone got into the act for UNO. All 13 players scored and 12 of 13 players saw at least ten minutes of action as the Privateers (1-2) never trailed in the contest.
New Orleans was led by
Shania Woods (Accounting) with 12 points and 7 rebounds. The sophomore was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field.Â
Randi Brown, who was named College Sports Madness Southland Conference Player of the Week a day earlier, had 12 points and 4 assists and 4 steals.
"I was pleased that they focused on the areas we need to focus on but we still have some areas that need work," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "Get better on defense was the theme of the night and I think we did that."
Blue Mountain College (1-2) shot 11-for-41 from the field for a 26 percent clip. Tight UNO defensed forced the Toppers to commit 36 turnovers.
 Davenport singled out guard
Danielle Wright (Biological Sciences) who followed the best outing of her career against Southern Miss (15points) with another solid performance, 9 points, 3 assists and 4 steals.
"Danielle got in the gym this summer and really worked on her game so what she has done the last two games does not surprise me."
Junior forward Hallie Matthews (Biological Sciences) had 9-points in 11 minutes and guard
Mariah Wright (Computer Science) netted 7 points and dished 3 assists.
UNO's largest lead, 43-points, came at the 6:35 mark of the fourth quarter when a Hallie Matthews layup made it 62-19.
The numbers told the story. UNO bested Blue Mountain in points in the paint (46-to-14), point off turnovers (38-to-13), fast break points (18-to-0) and bench scoring (40-to-17).
The dominant showing gave some of the newcomers a chance to shine. Freshmen
Alyssa Quixley (Human Performance) canned 8 points in 9 minutes of action and center
Whitley Larry (Pre Secondary Education), another freshman, was impressive on the defensive end.
"Alyssa really made the most of her minutes off the bench and Whitley did a good job in the area of blocked shots." Davenport added, "I'm very proud of everyone tonight."
The Privateers will be back on the court Saturday, Nov. 19, when they host the University of South Alabama at Lakefront Arena. Tipoff is set for 4 pm.Â
