Volleyball Falls On Road Against Sam Houston State

Privateers swept on the road by Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas –
The University of New Orleans volleyball team wrapped up its road Southland Conference slate on Saturday afternoon, falling to host Sam Houston State 3-0 (26-24, 25-9, 25-13).

Freshman outside hitter Jordan Yauch (Biological Science) led the Privateers on both offense and defense with 14 digs plus 11 kills for a double-double while contributing a pair of blocks. Freshman setter Sarah Thomas (Accounting & Finance) orchestrated the attack with 19 assists.

On defense, defensive specialist Andrea Nava (Education) finished second on the team with 10 digs, followed by Thomas with eight, while senior middle blocker Keke Richards (Business Management) led the Privateers with four total blocks.

New Orleans (4-24, 1-14 SLC) outhit Sam Houston State (15-12, 9-5 SLC) by a .130-.094 advantage in the opening set, but lost 26-24. UNO opening up the match with three-consecutive points to take the lead, but an equal 3-0 response by the host made it 3-all. The two sides exchanged the following eight points before a 4-0 run ended the cycle and put the Bearkats up 11-7. Sam Houston led for the remainder of the match, forcing set point at 24-21 before a 3-0 rally by the Privateers forced extra points with a 24-24 score. SHS scored the final two points to take the opening set.

Sam Houston State carried the momentum from the opening set into the sequel, hitting a match-best .483 to take the 25-9 advantage. Trailing 2-0, UNO was unable to force a fourth set with a 25-13 decision in the third frame.

UNO ends their final road trip of the 2016 campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 8, against Jackson State in a nonconference bout at 6:30 p.m. The Privateers conclude the 2016 campaign at home on Saturday, Nov. 12 when the royal blue & silver host Southeastern Louisiana.
