Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Leads Wire-To-Wire In 100-35 Win Over Trinity Baptist

Sisters Shania and Asia Woods combine for 30 points and 19 rebounds

New Orleans, Louisiana- In a contest that was never in doubt, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team led throughout during a comfortable 100-35 win over the Trinity Baptist Eagles Monday morning at Lakefront Arena.   The Privateers evened their won-loss mark at 4-4 on the season and the 65-point margin of victory was two points shy of the school record of 67 set twice during the 1981 and 1985 seasons.

New Orleans scored the first six points of the game and never looked back, taking a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and thanks to a 28-10 second period, went into halftime with a 30-point, 47-17 lead.  UNO had a height advantage and put it to use, outrebounding the shorter Eagles in the first half 25-11 and scoring 38 points in the paint.

Freshman Asia Woods (Biological Sciences) lead the first half assault with 8 points and 6 rebounds.  She finished the day with career-bests 14 points,11 rebounds and 3 steals.

"It was the game plan," explained head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "We wanted to get post touches, scoring inside before we went outside against a team with no player taller than 5-8.  It was one of those games here you have to stay focused, and they did."

It was a good day for Woods Sisters as older sister Shania Woods (Accounting) netted 16 points and 8 rebounds.   The team leader in field goal percentage was 8-of-10 from the field.

Junior forward Hallie Matthews (Biological Sciences) started for the second time this season and contributed to the Privateers front-court dominance with 10 points and 4 rebounds as New Orleans outrebounded Trinity Baptist on the day 48-20.  When the teams met last season, a 109-46 win over the Eagles produced a UNO school record for rebound margin (52).

The home-team was paced by the leading scorer in the Southland Conference, Randy Brown with 26 points, matching her season-high.  The Houma, Louisiana native was 12-of-20 from the floor, 2-of-6 from the 3-point arc and dished out 5 assists.  Brown averages 20.1 points a game and leads the conference in points scored with 161.

"I didn't want to take nine 3 pointers in a game like this, but Randi was so wide open and it's hard to tell a shooter not to shoot," explained Davenport.

The Privateers won the battles of points-off-turnovers (52-0), second-chance-points (23-0) and fast-break-points (32-0).  They recorded 21 assists and had 17 steals.

The leading scorer for Trinity Baptist (2-8) was guard Juliana Calice with 18.

"We have to take this game and put it into a safe place," said Davenport.   It's good to have one of these but now we'll take a day off, have a Christmas party and then turn our attention to Texas.

The Privateers next game is a road match with the University of Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas, Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7 p. m. The game will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network.  UNO's next home game is Thursday, Dec. 29, at 5:30 p. m versus Crowley's Ridge.
