Women's Hoops Outpaced in Second Half of Loss to Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La.
 – The University of New Orleans women's basketball team (7-17, 4-11 Southland) went to the half tied but surrendered a 23-11 third quarter and fell 70-55 to the Nicholls Colonels (9-16, 7-8) on Wednesday at Stopher Gym.
 
The Privateers entered the half tied at 28-28 and kept the score close until the midway point of the third quarter. New Orleans was trailing by three with 5:30 left in the frame when the Colonels hit an 8-0 spurt over the next three minutes to push their lead to 11.
 
New Orleans was unable to string a run together for the rest of the contest. The closest they got the lead down to was nine points at the 2:21 mark when Bria Platenburg hit a jumper. Nicholls scored the last six points of the game to snap a three-game skid.
 
In the first half, New Orleans was able to keep Nicholls in check for the majority of the half. After the Colonels raced out to an early 5-0 lead, the Privateers scored eight of the next 11 points. The rest of the first half went by with neither team leading by more than four points. The score was tied seven times in the first half.
 
Nicholls drastically improved their field goal percentage from the first 20 minutes to the second. After shooting 35.3 percent in the opening half, the Colonels connected on 47.3 percent of their field goal attempts and out-rebounded the Privateers 22-17.
 
Alexis Martin scored a team and season-high 14 points in the loss. Martin connected on all six of her free throw attempts and added five rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Randi Brown was the only other Privateer in double figures with 10 points. Jewel Angelo came off the bench and scored eight points on 4-of-9 from the field.
 
Nicholls was paced by their leading scorer, LiAnn McCarthy who dropped 21 points. Tia Charles and Cassidy Barrios each achieved double figures as well with 15 and 13 points respectively. Taylor Morrison added nine points and a team-best three assists on the night.
 
The Privateers will next face Abilene Christian on Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
