Volleyball Makes A Late Run But Falls Short At McNeese

Privateers get solid performance from freshman Jordan Shumacher in final set

Lake Charles, Louisiana- Despite dropping the first two sets, the University of New Orleans volleyball team extended the third set before falling to McNeese in straight sets, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 29-27), Thursday night in Lake Charles.

Freshman Jordan Shumacher turned in the best outing of her career with 5 kills and 3 digs off the bench.

New Orleans stands at 10-15 overall and 4-9 in Southland Conference play.  McNeese is 17-11,8-5.

"I thought McNeese played well and they were prepared," said head coach Millicent Van Norden.  "Their offense we efficient and we couldn't slow them down.  We played a little better in set three but we still weren't consistent enough."

FIRST SET

New Orleans commits 9 attack errors and 4 service errors.  Privateers could manage a hitting percentage of only .054.  Lane Hindenburg led UNO with 3 kills while Blessing Dunn had 7 digs in a 25-16 first set win for McNeese.

SECOND SET

The Privateers led 10-6 in the set, however the Cowgirls went on a 20-6 run to take the set 25-16.  McNeese has 16 total blocks while New Orleans has 2.   Andrea Nava has 2 service aces in the set.  McNeese had a second set hitting percentage of .526.

THIRD SET

New Orleans led 10-9 but 2 Jordan Shumacher kills, 2 service aces by Sarah Thomas and a McNeese error opened the lead to 15-9.  The Cowgirls fought back to tie it late in the set.  UNO's last lead was 26-25 however a Shanna Spree kill was the clincher at 29-27.  All of Jordan Shumacher's career best kills total came during the crucial third set.

BY THE NUMBERS

Junior Lane Hindenburg led New Orleans with 8 kills and a .300 hitting percentage on the night.

Juniors Blessing Dunn and Kaitlyn Grice had 6 kills each.  Dunn also had a match-high 13 digs.

Jordan Shumacher's 5 kills were a season high.  The freshman from Gilbert, Arizona came into the match with a total of 6 kills for the season. 

Sarah Thomas had 21 assists.

New Orleans is back in action Saturday, November 4, in Thibodaux, Louisiana when they face Nicholls at Noon.
