New Orleans- The sophomore tandem of
Asia Woods and
Jada Swafford established a number of season highs and kept New Orleans (1-5) in the game. However, the Privateers dropped a close one to Jacksonville State (5-2), 59-54, Thursday night at Lakefront Arena.
Although New Orleans shot a frigid 37 percent (23-of-62) from the field on the night, Woods (6-of-8) and Swafford (4-of-6) combined for a 55 percent clip from the field. Woods, from Houston, Texas, led all scorers on the night with 13 points while Swafford, of Alexandria, Louisiana, had 8 points, 4 assists and 2 steals.
"I made the change and put
Asia Woods in the starting lineup and she came out blasting on tonight," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "The play of those two sophomores was a big positive tonight and it's something to look forward to."
FIRST QUARTER
Jacksonville State jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead. UNO picked up its first basket at the 6:56 mark, a tip-in by
Asia Woods.
Randi Brown had 8 points in the period as JSU led 19-14.
SECOND QUARTER
At the break New Orleans still trailed by five, 35-30, thanks to the play of Woods and Swafford. Woods had 9 points in the second quarter and Swafford had 6 in only 7 minutes of play. The Gamecocks' largest lead was 9, at 31-22 on a Brianna Perry layup with 4:22 to go in the first half. The JSU bench outscored UNO's 20-7.
THIRD QUARTER
The Privateers won the third quarter 18-10. New Orleans grabbed its first lead 5 minutes and 48 seconds in as Swafford and Woods teamed up on an inbound-breakaway for a bucket making it 39-38. New Orleans would end the period with a three-point, 48-45 advantage as
Shania Woods had 7 points in the third. The Privateers had their best shooting period of the night, 8-of-17, 47 percent.
FOURTH QUARTER
New Orleans lost its shooting touch again scoring only 6 points on baskets by
Randi Brown,
Shania Woods and
Mariah Wright. UNO was 3-of-12 from the field as the Gamecocks took the fourth and deciding period 14-6.
BY THE NUMBERS
Asia Woods got her first start of the season and collected season highs in minutes (35), points (13), rebounds (5), assists (3), and steals (3).
Jada Swafford grabbed season highs in minutes (25), field goals made (4), assists (4) and steals (2).
Randi Brown, the nation's fourth-leading scorer, had an off-night scoring 11 points (13 below her average) shooting only 4-of-23 from the floor.
The 6-point final quarter was the second lowest single quarter output by the Privateers this season. They had a 5-point period against South Alabama.
New Orleans had 14 steals led by
Randi Brown with 7 thefts.
Up next for the Privateers, a road game against 6-1 Missouri ranked 19
th in the latest Associated Press Poll. The game can be seen on SEC Network+ December 2.
