NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team hosted Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon, scoring the only run needed to complete the weekend sweep in the first inning of a 14-0 victory at Maestri Field.
For the second time this weekend, New Orleans' (3-0) defense held their opposition scoreless. Sophomore southpaw
Bryan Warzek got the start for the Privateers, throwing six frames with four strikeouts and five hits allowed to get the victory. Senior right-handed pitcher
Ryan Leone, left-handed pitcher
Hunter Medine and junior right-handed pitcher
William Griffin all threw one inning for New Orleans.
"Our pitchers looked great all weekend," head coach
Blake Dean said. "In my opinion they did better than our offense did. We were finally able to get our offense going in this game. I felt like in the first two games we were just doing enough to get a win, so to see them come out and play like this was good."
At the plate against Prairie View A&M (1-2) the Privateers totaled 18 hits with two home runs. Senior infielder
Samuel Capielano got UNO's first home run of the young season in the sixth inning, sending him and junior infielder
Owen Magee round the bases with his second-career blast. Junior infielder
Dakota Phillips also hit a home run in the victory, sending one deep the following frame.
Senior infielder
Hezekiah Randolph, Capielano, junior outfielder
Tristan Clarke, Magee, Phillips plus sophomore outfielder
Orynn Veillon all logged two hits, while Randolph and Capielano both recorded three RBI. Every Privateer who stepped into the batter's box got a hit, with junior catcher
Spencer Miller, junior outfielder
Jared McKay and sophomore infielder
Scott Crabtree all recording hits in their first at bats of the campaign.
Veillon got the Privateers on the scoreboard in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring senior outfielder
Dakota Dean in what would prove to be the game-winning run. The royal blue and white added another run to their lead in the fourth, before erupting for 12 between innings 6-8.
Andreus Faltesek got the start for Prairie View, allowing seven runs off nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Avery Williams and Phillip Gay combined to pitch the final two frames. Xavier Jefferson paced the Panthers attack, recording a team-best two hits.
The Privateers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 when they host nationally-ranked LSU in a televised game presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For ticket information for the upcoming campaign and future Privateer Athletics events, contact the UNO Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 280-GAME (4263) and season tickets can be purchased over the Internet by clickingÂ
