HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The University of New Orleans (11-17, 5-8 Southland) look to play spoiler on Senior night against Sam Houston State (20-5, 12-1 Southland) Tuesday evening in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. But the Bearkats took the match 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 23-25)
SET ONE
Sam Houston looked to be the dominant team early jumping out to a 10-9 lead and would stretch it to a 19-9 lead moments later.
But the Privateers would battle back and go on an 8-0 run, taking advantage of a few Bearkat miscues and getting a service ace from freshman setter
Amanda Wurster. And just moments later the Privateers pulled to within one at 21-20, off an ace from Grice.
But Sam Houston scored the final five-point to take the opening stanza 25-20.
SET TWO
The two teams were evenly matched in the early going in set two, but Sam Houston held the advantage at 9-8. And the Bearkats look like they were going to take set two easily getting to 24-18, but UNO had other plans and used a 5-0 run to make it 24-22 to force a late Bearkat timeout.
Sam Houston did not waste any time out the break, taking set two 25-22, and going up in the match 2-0.
SET THREE
UNO looked to force a fourth set after taking a 7-5 lead early in set three. And the Privateer lead grew to 20-17 later in the set. But the Bearkats chipped away at the UNO lead and eventually to the match after winning set three 25-23.
NEXT UP
The Privateers hit the road one last time, and make the short trip to Nicholls on Saturday at 1 p.m.
INSIDE THE BOX
Kaitlyn Grice fell one block away from a double-double finishing with 11 kill and nine blocks and hit .455 in the match.
Jordan Schumacher and
Brianna Vega added eight kills apiece.
Amanda Wurster and
Sarah Thomas combined for 32 helpers.
