BEAUMONT, Texas – After dropping the first two set of the match the University of New Orleans (10-11, 4-3 Southland) battled back to force a fifth set but fell a few points shy as Lamar University (6-11, 3-3 Southland) won the match 3-2 (21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 16-14) Saturday afternoon in McDonald Gym.
Kaitlyn Grice set a new career record in kills with 18 on the match, as she also added three aces and three blocks.
Blessing Dunn added nine kills and 10 digs. And
Sarah Thomas dished out 29 assists.
SET ONE
The Cardinals hit .364 as a team in the first set and took the opening stanza 25-21.
SET TWO
The Privateers got off to an excellent start in the second set getting out to a 5-1 lead early on. But Lamar chipped away at the UNO lead tying things at 12 and eventually taking the set 25-20
SET THREE
Early in the set, the teams were evenly matched, but UNO used a 5-0 run to make it 13-8 and force a Lamar timeout. Later in the set, the Cardinals would tie the set at 20 apiece but New Orleans stayed alive in the match with a 25-21 set three win.
Grice had five kills and a service ace in the set.
Brianna Vega and Dunn added two kills apiece.
SET FOUR
Just like in set three the teams were equal in the early going in the set. But the Privateers distanced themselves in the set with a 5-0 run to make it 14-11. The Blue and Silver would go on and take set three to even things up at 2-2 with a 25-23 set four win.
Grice added to her kill total finishing with four in the set.
SET FIVE
Set five saw 12 ties and seven lead changes as Lamar edged the Privateers 16-14 to take the match 3-2.
NEXT UP
The Privateers travel to Baton Rouge for their final non-conference meeting of the year, as they take on Southern University Tuesday, October ninth at 6 pm in the Clifford Seymore Gym.
