New Orleans- Cold shooting and turnovers were the deciding factors as the University of New Orleans fell to the University of Louisiana-Monroe Sunday at Lakefront Arena, 57-44.
Â
New Orleans (2-2) never led in the contest while shooting a frigid 30% from the floor. The Privateers committed 19 turnovers and ULM scored 13 points off those mistakes.
Â
"We can't win many games going 15-for-50," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "We missed too many lay-ups right around the basket in the beginning of the game and that allowed them to jump out to a 9-0 lead."
Â
FIRST QUARTER
Â
UNO did not get on the board after falling behind by 9 points until
Vaquela Pimpton---one of five subs who replaced the starters 2:17 into the game----canned a jumper at the 7:19 mark. The period ended with Louisiana-Monroe leading by eight, 18-10, thanks to 6 Privateer turnovers leading to 8 points for the visitors. Â
Â
SECOND QUARTER
Â
The Warhawks reached their largest advantage of the first half with an 11-point lead, 25-14, at 5:13 of the second period. The half ended with ULM leading by seven, 29-22, as senior center
Shania Woods had 8 points and 7 rebounds at the break.Â
Kayla Thomas added 5 points and 4 rebounds in 10 minutes of action off the bench
Â
THIRD QUARTER
Â
Layups by
Jada Duncantell and
Kayla Thomas cut the lead to three early in the quarter and with 2:45 to go UNO drew to within 2 points thanks to a
Traya Bruce three-pointer to make it 31-29. ULM scored the last five points of the period on a layup and a 3 pointer by Tiara Malone in the final seconds for a 36-29 lead.
Â
FOURTH QUARTER
Â
New Orleans never really threatened again although they closed to within five points when
Kayla Thomas, who finished the day with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, scored inside to make it 45-40. However, a 3 pointer by Destini Lunsford (16 points) and a layup by Arsula Clark, who led all scorers with 21, stretched the lead to 10 at 50-40. ULM hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute of the game to seal the win, 57-44.
Â
Shania Woods led New Orleans with 13 points and 9 rebounds
Â
"This is a team that's still learning. They did not give up. You learn lessons through wins and you learn lessons through losses."
Davenport continued, "We'll get back to the drawing board and we'll look at some of our mistakes and we'll look at doing a better job."
