NEW ORLEANS WOMEN COMPLETE REGULAR SEASON WITH SEASON-SWEEP OF SLU, 74-71
Randi Brown has 36, Dionijhae Thomas has career-high 10
Hammond, Louisiana- The University of New Orleans (15-14, 11-7 Southland) got 36 points from
Randi Brown and an unexpected 10 points from freshman
Dionjhae Thomas as they closed the regular season with a win on the road over Southeastern Louisiana (8-20, 7-10 Southland) in Hammond, 74-71.
The Privateers lead by 24 points in the third quarter but the Lady Lions fought back to take a two-point lead late in the game. New Orleans hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:55 to secure the win.
"I felt like we lost some of our defensive edge in the third quarter," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "But these girls are tough. They hung tough and found a way to knock down free throws.
Dionjhae Thomas's ten points was a real spark for this team tonight."
FIRST QUARTER
New Orleans took the first quarter 16-10. They never trailed in the period but SLU managed to tie it twice at 2-2 and 4-4. Point guard
Mariah Wright, who played all 40 minutes of the game, led the scoring with 6 points on two 3-pointers.
SECOND QUARTER
UNO appeared to take control of the contest in the second, doubling up Southeastern 26-13 in the quarter to take a 19-point, 42-23 lead into the break.
Randi Brown was red hot in the period with 14 of her 18 first half points. Freshman
Dionjhae Thomas had 8 of her 10 points on the day including two 3-pointers. New Orleans held the Lady Lions to 22.2% shooting from the field (8-of-36) in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
The third quarter was the "Charliee Dugas Show". SLU turned the tables on UNO winning the stanza 31-15 thanks to 21 points in the quarter by Dugas. The Privateers had a 24-point, 49-25 advantage with 8:21 to go. From that point, SLU outscored New Orleans 29-8. Southeastern never took the lead but at the end of the third it was only a three-point deficit, New Orleans 57 Southeastern Louisiana 54. Charliee Dugas finished with 38 points on the night to lead all scorers.
FOURTH QUARTER
Southeastern grabbed its first lead at 61-60 on a Taylin Underwood triple at the 7:35 mark and their largest lead, two points, 71-69, when Dugas hit a layup with 1:58 to go in regulation. From there,
Kayla Mundy's two free throws tied it at 71,
Randi Brown knocked down two freebies giving UNO the lead for good at 73-71 and Brown hit 1-of-2 with 18 seconds to go to make it a three-point lead. Charliee Dugas missed a three-pointer to tie as time expired and the Privateers completed the season-sweep of the Lady Lions, 74-71.
"That was one of our goals to have a winning-season. In a winning season you're not promised not to lose, you're just promised to win more than you lose. One game over 500 is winning more than we've lost so I'm grateful for that," said Davenport. After tonight we're back to zero and zero."
New Orleans will hit the court next at the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Tournament in Katy, Texas, March 8-11.
