Nicholls' Free Throws with 0.3 Seconds gives Colonels 62-61 win

Shania Woods posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds

NEW ORLEANS – Shania Woods posted her ninth double-double of the season and Kayla Mundy finished with five steals and four assists and hit what looked to be the game-winning shot with 3.2 seconds remaining but the University of New Orleans (11-12, 7-5 Southland) suffered heartbreak after Nicholls State University (9-12, 4-6 Southland) made its free throws with 0.3 ticks to go to defeat the Privateers 62-61.
Woods recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds, Mariah Wright added 12 points and three assists, Asia Woods finished with 11 and Randi Brown scored 10 to go with her four assists.

FIRST QUARTER
The Privateers dominated their way to a 17-6 through the first, forcing nine Nicholls turnovers and limiting the Colonels to 2-of-13 shooting.

Shania Woods scored six points and added a block and two rebounds and Mundy swiped two passes. The efficient offense was evident with the Silver and Blue going 6-of-9 from the field.

SECOND QUARTER
The defense continued to stand tall en route to a 31-15 lead at the break. Woods finished with 10 points (5-of-7) and six rebounds, Brown added six points and three assists and Dionjhae Thomas pulled down four rebounds.

Nicholls shot just 15.2 percent from the field and 1-of-13 from three-point range. The 15 total points were the fewest allowed in the first half this season.

THIRD QUARTER
The Colonels erased a 16-point UNO lead to take their first lead of the game, 40-39, with 2:15 to go. Nicholls closed the quarter with 33 points and a 48-44 lead.

FOURTH QUARTER
The back and forth frame featured the Privateers three lead changes and with three seconds remaining, Brown hit an open Mundy at the top of the key for a three to put New Orleans in front 61-59.

After three timeouts, Nicholls attempted a last second heave and went to the line for three shots with 0.3 ticks to go. Cassidy Barrios drained the three from the charity stripe to give the Colonels a 62-61 victory Saturday.

NEXT UP
The Privateers have their first bye of the week and resume Southland action Saturday at 2 p.m. at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
