Privateer Pitching Strikes Out 14 in 6-2 Victory

New Orleans scores five runs in first

NEW ORLEANS – On the back of a five run first, the University of New Orleans (8-9) defeated Southern University (5-10), 6-2, Tuesday evening at Maestri Field.

Nine hitters went up to bat in the bottom half of the first as the Privateers scored five runs on five hits.

Cody Ducote and Collin Morrill recorded a 2-4 day at the plate. Owen Magee, Orynn Veillon, Kenneth Yetter and Jay Robinson added a hit. Tonight was Veillon's debut as the junior centerfielder and preseason all-conference selection returned from injury.

The Privateers used seven arms in the victory. Starter Rafe Schindler was credited with his first win of the season. The right-hander combined with six relievers for 14 strikeouts. Jaguar starting pitcher Daniel Franklin (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans got off to a fast start, using the first inning to put the game away. The scoring started on the Ducote two-run single. The Privateers added two more on singles by Morrill and Robinson for a 5-0 lead.

The Silver and Blue made it 6-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Southern scored two runs in the eighth to cut UNO's lead to 6-2 but the Privateers were able to clinch the series victory over the Jaguars, taking the second contest after defeating SU 14-3 in the first meeting February 18.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Privateers will resume their Southland Conference schedule as they travel to Abilene Christian for a three game set. Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m.
