CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Bryan Warzek set a new season-high in the Southland Conference with 16 strikeouts in 8.0 shutout innings as the University of New Orleans (12-15, 4-7 Southland) clinched the series victory with a 2-0 win over Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (16-12, 2-6 Southland) Friday evening at Chapman Field.
Warzek's 16 punchouts fell just one shy of the tying the program record as the junior southpaw allowed just four hits to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Reeves Martin shut the door in the ninth to earn his fourth career save and first since April 29, 2017 (University of the Incarnate Word).
Orynn Veillon hit a solo shot in the second for his first home run of the season and
Owen Magee went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Warzek's outing marked the fourth double-digit strikeout performance. He entered the weekend ninth in the nation with 55 total strikeouts. Right-hander Aaron Hernandez fell to 1-4 after giving up the two runs and five hits in 6.2 innings. Hernandez struck out eight in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers got the scoring started in the second on Veillon's first home run of the season for an early 1-0 lead. Veillon led the club with 15 long balls last season and is hitting .304 on the year after returning from injury.
Cody Ducote led off the fourth with a walk and moved 90 feet away from home on a stolen base and error. Later in the inning, the designated hitter made it 2-0 UNO after scoring on
Collin Morrill's groundout.
It was all Warzek needed as the New York native silenced the Corpus Christi bats in the series clincher.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Privateers will conclude their series with the Islanders tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Kyle Arjona gets the nod for the Silver and Blue.
