New Orleans- Senior center
Shania Woods became the 17
th player in the history of New Orleans women's basketball to reach 1-thousand points as Lamar, the preseason conference favorite, forced 28 turnovers and the result was a 79-57 Cardinals win.
The Privateers are now 4-8 overall and 0-3 in Southland Conference play. Lamar stands at 10-4 and a perfect 3-0 in conference.
Woods, from Houston, Texas, needed 8 points to reach the magic number. A layup at 7:05 of the third period pushed her over 1-thousand-point plateau as she finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds on the night.
"It's pretty cool," said Woods. "It means a lot because this is my last year and I really didn't know I was approaching 1-thousand points until a couple of games ago. So I'm proud of this accomplishment."
"She's in an elite group," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "Lots of us score 1-thousand points in high school, but when you do it on the college level it's a big difference. I'm truly excited for her because not many people go on to score a thousand points in their college careers."
The Privateers never led in the contest as the Cards ended the first two periods with double-digit leads, 20-9 at the end of the first quarter and 41-29 at halftime. Lamar's largest first half lead was 17 points on three occasions. However, a
Shania Woods bucket at 1:39 of the second quarter cut the lead to only 8 points at 36-28 before Lamar went into the break leading by 12.
In the third period UNO trailed by 13 at 48-35, but a 5-0 run cut it to eight again thanks to a layup by
Kayla Thomas and a 3-pointer by
Rehema Franklin, who led New Orleans with 12 points, canned one of her three long distance shots on the evening to make it 48-40 with 2:35 to go. Lamar withstood the Privateers charge and stretched the lead to 14 at the end of three, 58-44.
The Cardinals largest lead of the night came in the fourth period, 23 points thanks to a 14-2 advantage in points in the paint during the final period courtesy of successful drives to the basket by Moe Kinard, who lead all scorers with 29 and Chastadie Barrs, who was one assist shy of a quadruple-double, 17 points, 10 rebounds, 12 steals and 9 assists.
"Every time we would cut it to a single digit lead, we gave up a big basket that pushed it right back to double-digits and that's pretty deflating. We weren't short on effort tonight we just didn't have all of the smarts and making those inside layups right when we needed them," said Davenport.
----Junior guard
Rehema Franklin's 12-point night was a career-high for the product of Edna Karr High School in New Orleans.
----
Whitley Larry led the Privateers in rebounds with 9.
----Lamar grabbed 45 rebounds and won the battle of points-in-the-paint, 46-22.
----With 11 points and 7 rebounds,
Shania Woods had her streak of double-double performances snapped at 4.
