HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers (9-8, 2-1) fell on the short end of a very competitive first set and wound up suffering their first conference loss by a 3-0 score (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) to the Sam Houston State Bearkats (7-8, 3-0) on Thursday.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Rhyan Rand led the team in kills with eight and added seven digs.
Ehize Omoghibo had seven kills while
Brianna Vega and
Shelby Pullins added six kills each. Pullins also led the team in blocks with four.
Andrea Nava and
Lucie Pokorna co-led the team in digs with 12 apiece.
FIRST SET
The Privateers surged in front with a five-point run to assume a 13-10 lead. New Orleans held the lead for most of the remainder of the set, but the Bearkats provided a three-point push to trim the Privateer advantage to one at 21-20. Trailing 23-22, Sam Houston State again had a mini surge that ended the set with three straight points. The set finished on the Bearkats' fourth block of the set.
SECOND SET
New Orleans fell into an early 8-4 deficit in the second set. The margin got as wide as eight at 22-14 before the Privateers mounted a furious late rally. Two service aces helped the Privateers cut the Bearkat advantage to two. However, Sam Houston State got two kills from Catherine Krieger to hold on and push their match lead to 2-0.
THIRD SET
Proceedings started well for the Privateers as they scored four of the first five points. After the score was knotted three times by the Bearkats, the decisive run came in short order. Sam Houston State used a 6-1 run to separate to a 17-12 lead en route to a 3-0 victory. The Beakats' defensed limited New Orleans to a .108 hitting percentage.
NEXT UP
New Orleans is back at it on Saturday when they travel to Houston to face the HBU Huskies. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
