LORMAN, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team kicked off their season in style with a 6-1 victory over the Alcorn State Braves on Friday afternoon at the Alcorn Tennis Complex.
Alcorn State was dealing with a short-handed roster and could only field two doubles teams.
Salma Abdelrahim and
Brittany Johnson provided the win to clinch the doubles point when they took a 6-1 victory at flight two.
Trang Dao and
Mar Gendra also won 6-3 at flight one to sweep the board in doubles.
With just five players available for singles, Alcorn State forfeited flight six. Gendra scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory at flight three to put the Privateers on the verge of accomplishing a victory in their season opener.
"Ank played number one singles and did really well," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "I liked what I saw from the team today across the board. They competed really well."
Dao finished the job with a win at flight two. The victory is her 39
th spring win, tying
Amber Garza for fifth on the program list since 2000. "I think it's a milestone for TK," said Kanga. "She's represented the tennis program well and she's been successful not only in leading this team but off the court."
Ank Vullings played at flight one and scored a 6-4, 6-0 victory. The Privateers also earned a point at flight five with
Yurina Asai winning in straight sets. Alcorn's only point came from Stefany Grlj in a three-set battle at flight four.
The Privateers women move on to face Jackson State on Saturday. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
