Brittany Johnson Goes 2-0 but Privateers Fall to Northwestern State

NEW ORLEANSBrittany Johnson went 2-0 in her matches but the New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (7-4, 1-3) lost their second match of the weekend by a 6-1 score to the Northwestern State Lady Demons (9-2, 3-0) on Sunday at the University Tennis Center.

Johnson paired up with Salma Abdelrahim for a flight two doubles win to move the duo's record to 6-2 on the season. They took a 6-1 decision over Patricja Polanska and Reha Verma. However, the Lady Demons won the other two doubles matches at flight three and one to take the opening point.

Northwestern State kept the momentum up singles with straight set victories at flight four and five to push their lead to 3-0. The Lady Demons clinched the match when Maria Skyba rallied back to take a win at flight two. After losing the first set 6-2, Skyba came back to win the next two sets both by 6-2 margins to give Northwestern State a 3-0 start to Southland Conference play.

The next two matches to finish both went to Northwestern State in long straight set victories. Polina Mutel won 7-5, 6-4 at flight one while Verma took a flight three win by the same score.

Johnson closed the day for the Privateers with the lone point notched. The senior was matched up against Judit Castillo who had previously been 7-1. Castillo took the first set 6-1 but Johnson rallied back to take the next two sets. She won the second set 6-4 and dominated a third set tiebreak to move her mark to 3-0 in singles this spring.

The Privateers will have a three-match weekend on tap. New Orleans will host Bradley and Florida A&M on Friday and Sunday. In between, the Privateers will make the short trip to Nicholls on Saturday, Mar. 16.
