NATCHITOCHES, La – The New Orleans Privateers (11-7, 2-4) allowed seven runs with two outs in an 8-1 loss to the Northwestern State Demons (10-7) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.
Starter, Nathan Jones got around trouble in the second inning through the benefit of three pickoffs and set sail for seven innings to pick up the win and move to 2-1. Jones struck out nine batters and allowed six hits in his longest start of the season. Chris DeMayo (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers strung together three hits and a walk against Jones, but three Privateers were picked off on the base paths. Northwestern State catcher, Jakob Nunez had two of the pickoffs from behind the plate while Jones notched the other. The Demons added to their lead with two more in the third. Jeffrey Elkins delivered the first of two doubles on the day to score the first run. Northwestern State added another tally three batters later. Hayden Brown delivered a two-out RBI single to put the Demons lead at 4-0.
Northwestern State added another two-spot in the fifth. After two strikeouts recorded to start the inning, the Demons drew two walks and got a base hit to load the bases. Nunez then drew a walk to score a run and Larson Fontenot was hit by an 0-2 pitch to bring the lead to 6-0.
The Privateers got their lone run across in the sixth inning.
Pearce Howard roped a double into left-center and was brought home by a
Gaige Howard double. The Demons added two more on a two-run single from Brown who posted three RBI in his four hits.
