NEW ORLEANS – Hayden Wesneski was cruising through Friday's contest until the eighth, when
Antonio Gauthier Jr. went yard for the second time this season. After retiring two outs in the ninth, UNO threatened with back-to-back-to-back singles, putting the tying run on deck. However, Wesneski was able to limit the damage and give #RV Sam Houston State University (14-5, 6-1 Southland) a 6-2 win over the University of New Orleans (12-9, 2-5 Southland) Friday evening at Maestri Field.
Wesneski struck out 13 and was efficient, tossing 107 pitches to improve to 4-0 in the complete game.
Brandon Mitchell matched his season-high of 7.0 innings, but was charged with the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year.
Luke Bradley and
Cortlynn Ramirez went an inning each in relief of Mitchell.
Luther Woullard went 2-for-4 and
Pearce Howard,
Gaige Howard and Gauthier Jr. each recorded a hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mitchell matched Hayden Wesneski with zeros through the first four innings. The Bearkats struck in the fifth with two runs and tacked on three between the sixth and seventh for a 5-0 lead. New Orleans had a chance at a play at the plate in the fifth, but a bobble forced to settle for the out at first.
In the bottom of the seventh, Woullard found a hole on the right side as the second baseman was shifted over for UNO's first hit of the ballgame.
Wesneski looked unfazed on the mound until the eighth when Gauthier Jr. muscled his way to a solo shot for the Privateers' first run of the game.
The Bearkats got the run back in the eighth on aggressive baserunning to add an insurance run for Wesneski, who remained in the game looking for his first complete game of the season.
Wesneski recorded two quick outs but was put to the test as he surpassed the century mark on pitches thrown.
Pearce Howard hit the first base bag for his first hit of the game and Woullard singled to right to put runners on first and second.
Gaige Howard ripped a base knock up the middle to bring home
Pearce Howard and make it 6-2.
The right-hander was able to end the UNO rally to give the Bearkats the series opener 6-2.

The Privateers and Bearkats resume the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Chris Turpin (3-0, 2.05 ERA) opposes Sam Houston State right-hander Riley Gossett (2-1, 5.79 ERA).
