NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (8-6) lost a grueling doubles point and fell 7-0 to the Marshall Thundering Herd (5-10) on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
The Privateers got the match started with a win at flight three as
Claudette Gilhespie and
Lea Alguacil gained a sizable early lead on their way to a 6-2 win. The Herd won at flight two to force a deciding match at flight one.
Trang Dao and
Ank Vullings rallied from down 5-0 in the set to go ahead 6-5. However, Marshall broke serve to force a tiebreak which they won to earn the deciding match for the first point of the day. The Thundering Herd then swept the singles matches.
Anna Smith survived two service breaks and won a tiebreak in the first set on her way to a straight set victory. Victoria Walter and
Salma Abdelrahim went to a third set tiebreak which they played to 10 points. Walter won by a 10-5 margin.
Marshall won tiebreak sets at two other flights: the opening set at flight four from Daniela Dankanych and the second set at flight five from Madi Ballow.
New Orleans will hit the road for a long while with their next six matches away from the University Tennis Center. Five of those matches will be against Southland foes. Next up is a Texas trip when the Privateers travel to UIW on Friday, Mar. 29 and Abilene Christian on Sunday, Mar. 31. The Privateers won't return home until Apr. 12 for their last two matches of the regular season: vs. Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
