ABILENE, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (6-11, 0-2) narrowly lost the doubles point in a 5-2 defeat to the Abilene Christian Wildcats (16-4, 2-0) on Sunday afternoon to close out a three-match week.
The Wildcats began with a strong performance at flight three in doubles to take a 6-1 win. However,
Johannes Klein and
Samuel Armand formed a response for New Orleans at flight two with a 6-3 triumph.
The doubles point came down to flight one and a tiebreak, but Abilene Christian persevered by a 7-4 score.
In singles, New Orleans struck the first blow.
Odysseas Papaioannou blitzed Sebastian Langdon early and held on in the second set for a 6-0, 7-5 victory to level the score at 1-1.
Josh Sheehy finished next for Abilene Christian with a 6-4, 6-4 win to put the Wildcats back on top in the match.
Then
Misha Fomenkov stormed his way to victory at flight two which tied the match at 2-2. Fomenkov topped Jonathan Sheehy 6-4, 6-4. The rest of the afternoon belonged to the Wildcats who remain undefeated at home this spring (5-0).
Dimitris Azoides put the Wildcats ahead for good at flight four with a 6-4, 6-3 win. The match was finished at flight three where Nikolas Moceanu came back from losing a first set tiebreak to triumph in three sets. The day finished with a straight set victory by Riley Tran at flight five.
The Privateers' next match will be on Thursday, Apr. 4 when they take on the UIW Cardinals. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start.
