NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (6-6) got off to a hot start in doubles, but fell short in singles in a 6-1 loss to the Troy Trojans on Thursday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
It was a spirited start in doubles for the Privateers.
Odysseas Papaioannou and
Nicolas Kramer began on flight three by winning the first five games. They sealed the deal with a subsequent hold for a 6-1 victory. That brought the action to flight two where after a roller coaster start, New Orleans prevailed to win the first point of the day.
Johannes Klein and
Samuel Armand got the early jump with a 3-1 advantage over Jiaqi Duan and Pelayo Atuna. The Trojans battled back with a break and a hold to tie the match at 3-3. However, Klein and Armand earned their second service break of the match which propelled them to a 6-3 win. Troy won the match at flight two 6-3.
Troy regained the momentum early in singles by rattling off the next three points. The Trojans won straight set matches at flight four, five, and one to put themselves on the brink of victory. However, the other three matches stood firmly in the balance.
But the Trojans took the match clinching point in a three-set battle at flight two. Oskar Michalek rallied back from down a set to give Troy the road win and move their mark to 13-1. Troy then took the remaining two matches at flight three and six to finish out the day.
New Orleans has nine days to prepare for their next match against nationally ranked Texas A&M. The Privateers will play the Aggies in Baton Rouge on Mar. 16 at 4 p.m.
