Turpin Turns in Quality Start, but Nicholls Evens Series With the Privateers

THIBODAUX, La. – It was another high drama finish as the New Orleans Privateers (9-4, 1-1) fell on the short end of a 3-2 decision to the Nicholls Colonels (8-8, 1-1) on Saturday at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels loaded the bases with two singles and a walk in the eighth inning of a tie game. Brady Bell hit a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Alec Paz from third. After securing the lead, Peter Holland (1-1) went back out for the ninth and finished off the game by retiring the side in order with two strikeouts to pick up the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Just like Friday night, the Colonels got on the board in the first inning. With two on and two out, Austin France battled for 12 pitches before dropping a single into shallow center that scored Champ Davison. The Colonels added another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 2-0. Dane Simon hit a wind-aided infield triple to lead off the frame. That set up Davison who hit a sac fly to right.

Nicholls starter, Jacob Bedevian no-hit the Privateers through the first five innings and used only 25 pitches to get through the first three frames. The Privateers' first hit came when Darren Willis lined a single to right to lead off the sixth inning. Later in the frame, the Privateers plated their first run to cut the deficit to 2-1. With runners on first and third and one out, Pearce Howard drove a ball deep enough into left to score Salo Iza on a sac fly.

New Orleans chased Bedevian and tied the game an inning later. Gaige Howard doubled off the third base bag. After a bunt single put runners on first and third with no outs, the Colonels went to the pen. Tyler Theriot and Zach Autin combined to strike out the next two batters, but two walks followed. The second was a bases loaded free pass that scored the tying run.

INSIDE THE BOX
Kennard wound up with two hits on the night. Starter, Chris Turpin logged six innings to give the Privateers their second consecutive quality start. He allowed two runs on five hits and threw 114 pitches. New Orleans drew six walks. John Barr (1-2) took the loss after allowing a run on two hits in two innings of work.

Bell had the only multi-hit night for the Colonels. Davison went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run. The Colonels bullpen combined to allow just one hit over the last three innings.

NEXT UP
The rubber match will occur in Thibodaux on Sunday with a 2 p.m. first pitch. Shane Mejia is scheduled to start for Nicholls. The Privateers' starter is yet to be announced.
