NEW ORLEANS –
Nicolas Kramer returned to the lineup for doubles as the New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (7-13, 1-3) edged the Nicholls Colonels (5-14, 0-3) on Wednesday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
Kramer came back and teamed up with his usual doubles partner,
Odysseas Papaioannou. The tandem notched their seventh win together with a 6-2 triumph. That finished the doubles point in the home side's favor.
Johannes Klein and
Samuel Armand were first off the court with a 6-2 win of their own, the 11
th on the season.
In singles, several matches were hotly contested. Kramer was unable to play singles so the Colonels immediately evened up the match at 1-1. Klein put the Privateers back on top with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win at flight three.
Nicholls responded with a straight set win from Tobias Lentz to even the score again at 2-2. However, New Orleans won the next two matches, both of which went to three sets to seal their first conference victory.
It started with
Samuel Armand who gutted out a tiebreak in the first set against Eduardo Marino. Then Marino came back and forced a third set after winning the second by a double break. Armand wasn't to be denied however as he scored a 6-3 decision in the third set.
The deciding point wound up on Papaioannou's court at flight five. The freshman won the first set handily at 6-1. His opponent, Nestor Giribet Lopez came back and forced a third set after taking the second 7-5. Similar to Armand though, Papaioannou won the last set 6-3 to secure the win for New Orleans.
The day closed with Nicholls' Oleksandr Podgursky coming back from down a set to win in three at flight one.
The Privateers' scheduled match against William Carey was canceled. Their next match will take place on Saturday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi where the lone senior, Kramer will be honored before the proceedings begin at 12 p.m.
