Baseball Drops Second Game of Series to Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (18-21) was locked in an early pitcher's duel but fell on the short end of a 6-1 decision to the Missouri State Bears (13-25) on Friday at Hammons Field.

The score was at 2-1 in favor of the Bears until the sixth when they started to pull away with four runs over the next two frames. The Privateers were limited to four hits on the night. Bears starter, Logan Wiley went the distance for the second complete game by a Missouri State pitcher this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Missouri State collected five hits in the first two innings and took their first lead in the second inning. A bunt single by Logan Geha started the inning. After the Bears loaded the bases with one out, John Privitera struck a two-run single to right to give the home side an early 2-0 lead.

The Privateers formed a response in the next frame. Antonio Gauthier singled to start the inning, then advanced to second on an error from a pickoff attempt. He later scored on a Darren Willis RBI single to cut the Bears advantage to 2-1.

The score held there until the sixth. With two outs and two on, Ben Whetstone hit a fly ball to shallow left center that could not be held onto on a long running catch attempt. Two runs scored to extend the lead to 4-1.

Missouri State added two more to their advantage in the seventh. After loading the bases with one out, Jack Duffy brought in a run on a sac fly. A second run came home when Mason Hull scored on a wild pitch.

WIN-LOSS
The win went to Wiley (2-5). The loss was taken by Chris Turpin (4-3).

NEXT UP
The series closes with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. Steven Swift will start for the Privateers. The starter for Missouri State is yet to be announced.
