Woullard Earns Pelican Cup MVP, Privateers Baseball Defeats Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (22-23) opened up a tie game with a massive eighth inning in a 14-9 win over the Tulane Green Wave (27-17) on Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

New Orleans swept a season series of at least three games against Tulane for just the second time in school history. The lone other occurrence was back in 1990.

Luther Woullard was named the Pelican Cup MVP. He went 6-for-14 on the series with two doubles, eight RBI, and three runs.

WIN-LOSS
John Barr (4-4) picked up the win. The loss was taken by Connor Pellerin (2-3) who gave up four runs (three earned) and did not record an out.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The deciding inning came in the eighth. A contest that turned into a pitcher's duel after the third was blown open by New Orleans with 10 runs on five hits.

The bases were loaded after Tulane could not get an out on a bunt laid down by Wade Raburn. One batter later, Pearce Howard drew a bases loaded walk to break a 4-4 tie.

New Orleans continued to pour it on from there. Woullard hit a two-run double to right to bring two more runs in. Three batters later, back-to-back bases loaded walks from Robert Fabelo and Antonio Gauthier added two more to the advantage. In all, the Privateers sent 14 batters to the plate.

The Privateers jumped on Tulane starter, Krishna Raj early for two runs. The first two batters got aboard on a single and a walk. Two batters later, Woullard lined a single on a 2-2 pitch to give the Privateers an early 2-0 lead.

The Green Wave responded with a two-spot of their own in the bottom of the second. With two outs, David Bedgood slammed a home run to left field to level the score at 2-2.

The Privateers jumped back in front on the scoreboard in the third. With two outs, three consecutive runners reached on a single, hit-by-pitch, and a walk. With the bases loaded, Gauthier slapped a single to left that scored two runs and put the Privateers ahead 4-2.

The advantage didn't last long as Tulane tied the score again at 4-4. The Privateers turned a double play with two on and no outs. However, Hudson Haskin delivered a two-out triple to slice the deficit in half. The Green Wave got level on an ensuing RBI single from Grant Mathews.

INSIDE THE BOX
Raburn extended his hitting streak to eight games with his eighth inning single. Gauthier was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and two walks. Collin Morrill was 2-for-5 with a double and scored three runs. Gaige Howard had his 16th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with two runs. Barr went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits.

NEXT UP
The Privateers begin a three-game series at home against Abilene Christian on Friday. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6:30 p.m.
