NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (2-1) got out to a blazing fast start and never looked back in a 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-19, 25-15) over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions on Saturday to close out the first weekend and the New Orleans Invitational.
ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS
Lucie Pokorna was named the Setter of the Tournament.
Brianna Vega also made the All-Tournament squad. Vega racked up 46 kills including a career-best 22 against North Dakota. Pokorna finished with 113 assists, 17 kills, and nine service aces.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Rhyan Rand finished with a career-high six aces, six kills, and two blocks. Vega posted 13 kills and 13 digs. Pokorna finished with 26 assists, eight digs, and four kills in six attempts.
Sh'Diamond Holly was on in four of the Privateers' seven blocks.
Andrea Nava had seven digs for the match and 36 for the tournament.
FIRST SET
New Orleans hit .400 (16 kills to two errors in 35 attempts) during the opening set. The offense came from everywhere with four players recording at least three kills. Vega, led the offensive onslaught with four kills.
SECOND SET
After conceding the first point of the set, the Privateers were relentless in going on an 8-0 run. Rand had two of her aces in consecutive fashion, which forced a UAPB timeout. The Golden Lions never got closer than within four points for the remainder of the set.
THIRD SET
New Orleans scored nine of the first 11 points to open the deciding set. Rand and Pokorna combined for four aces during that run. UAPB came back to within a point, but after the Privateers got service back,
Kayla Cornett continued the late set push with an ace. That helped spark a 13-4 flourish, which capped off a 2-1 opening weekend.

The Privateers will head to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Southern Miss Invitational from Sept. 6-7. New Orleans will face Southern Miss, Mississippi State, and Arkansas State.
