Nava Reaches 1,000 Career Digs in Opening Match of Invitational


NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers could not overcome a fast Tennessee State start in a 3-1 defeat (25-11, 25-19, 18-25, 25-13) on Friday morning at the Human Performance Center.

Andrea Nava crested the 1,000-dig mark in the first set. She became the 10th in program history to achieve that feat. Nava had 14 digs for the match to lead the squad.
 
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Brianna Vega led the team in kills with 11. Ehize Omoghibo and Chloe Hampton each had seven kills. Hampton also had two of the Privateers' four service aces and reached double figures in digs with 10. Sh'Diamond Holly and Shelby Pullins each were in on three blocks.
 
FIRST SET
Tennessee State got off to a quick start with a 7-1 run to open the proceedings. The Privateers could not get closer for the remainder of the set. The Tigers hit .379 and had 15 kills in the set to four for the Privateers.
 
SECOND SET
The second set saw an early Tennessee State run to create separation at the outset. The Tigers started the set on a 10-4 run. The Tigers were limited to a .125 attack percentage, but they held the Privateers to a .135 clip in turn.
 
THIRD SET
New Orleans got into the match after a fast start of their own. The Privateers withstood an even flow early on and gained some separation in the latter stages. New Orleans executed a 6-1 run to break a 13-13 tie and kick clear. Three different Privateers had a kill in that stretch. Vega had two kills to help close the set.
 
FOURTH SET
Tennessee State closed out the match strong on the back of an 18-7 advantage in the kill department. The Tigers hit .457 in the deciding set. Gina Rivera Ortiz was one of four Tigers in double figures in digs with 24. Julia Pierson and Aria Holmes had 14 and 13 kills respectively.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will take on Mercer at 7 p.m. on Friday to close out the first day of the New Orleans Invitational.
