Women’s Basketball Cruises to Fifth Straight Victory

SAN ANTONIO - Freshman Mia Deck exploded for a career-high 24 points off of seven made threes as the Privateers won their fifth consecutive game by a 67-55 margin over host UIW in a Southland Conference showdown at the McDermott Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mia Deck hit her first six three points attempts and finished with seven overall (on 7-of-10 shooting) as she led the scoring attack with a career-high 24 points. The freshman guard set new career bests in field goals made, three pointers made and tied her high in rebounds with six. The performance was just two threes shy of tying the New Orleans program record of nine set by Randi Brown against A&M-Corpus Christi back on Dec. 31, 2016.
- The forwards made a big impact once against as Whitley Larry recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds, which tied a season-best in boards. She also recorded five steals and three blocks.
- Her forward-mate in Asia Woods was just as effective as she posted 14 points, one block and a steal.
- Kayla Thomas added four points, two boards and an assist in just nine minutes of play.
- New Orleans scored 32 points in the paint and 21 off of turnovers. The group also got 36 points from their bench,
- Seven Privateers scored in total. 
- New Orleans jumped out to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter of play.
- The Privateers played a strong second as well as they outscored UIW by a 21-15 margin to take a 34-24 edge into the half.
- New Orleans closed the game out in the third as they scored 21 points while holding the Cardinals to just seven to advance to the final frame up 55-31. 
- The Privateers took the air out of the ball in the fourth to cruise to the 67-55 victory.

FOR THE FOES
- Imani Robinson finished with a game-high 25 points to go with nine rebounds, three steals and an assist.
- Lunden Henry chipped in eight points, three rebounds and a block.
- Angelica Wiggins and Destiny Jenkins each recorded six points apiece.

NEXT UP
The Privateers are off from their usual Wednesday game with a bye but they will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 18 against Southland foe McNeese at 4 PM CST at the Lakefront Arena as part of a doubleheader with the men's program. Fans in attendance will help New Orleans celebrate its Academic Honors Night, when the athletic department will honor the outstanding work of their student-athletes at halftime of the men's game which tips at approximately 6 PM CST.
