NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans (1-0) started the season off with a clean sweep by a 7-0 score over the Prairie View Panthers (0-4) on Tuesday at the University Tennis Center.
DOUBLES
Ank Vullings and
Mar Gendra were paired up at flight two and the duo controlled the action throughout with a 6-1 win to set the tone early in the day.
Lea Alguacil and
Claudette Gilhespie were at flight three as they staved off the Panthers' pair of Claudia Medina and Anette Lira by a single break at 6-4 to secure the first point of the day.
Mahogani Green and Victoria Castillo were leading 5-4 when the point was decided.
SINGLES
That was as close as the Panthers got the rest of the day. Nobody dropped a set for the Privateers. Alguacil was first off the court at flight six with a lightning fast 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Gendra got out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set then won four straight games in the second set to notch a 6-4, 6-1 decision.
Vullings also continued to put the pressure on her opponent and came away with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. The last two matches to finish came when
Salma Abdelrahim and Gilhespie finished off their opponents at flight two and five respectively.
Abdelrahim dominated the first set and held off Castillo in the second (6-2, 7-5). Gilhespie held serve at 40-40 against Jessica Lackey to finish off the sweep 7-5, 6-3.

"You cannot underestimate any team. I was pleased with the way the women played and they won the doubles point pretty easily. The results were there but I was more impressed with their mindset and the way they competed."
NEXT UP
The Privateers take on Jackson State on Friday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
