NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (2-0) started fast and got a couple of big comebacks in singles on their way to a 6-1 victory over the Jackson State Tigers (1-1) on Friday at the University Tennis Center.
DOUBLES
The big serving of
Tristanne Dechoux set the tone for the afternoon. The freshman along with senior,
Yurina Asai gained an early break at flight one and never looked back en route to a 6-0 victory.
The other two matches were tightly contested at the start but a late surge at flight three got the job done.
Claudette Gilhespie and
Lea Alguacil were squared up at 3-3 after the first six games, but they controlled the rest of the action, winning three straight games to finish the opening point of the day for the squad.
SINGLES
Ank Vullings finished off a dominant performance after racing out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set. Vullings held for the rest of the set and eventually put the finishing touches on a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Mar Gendra also engineered a straight set victory to put the Privateers on the brink of victory. Gendra won her match at flight four, 6-2, 6-3.
Alguacil and Dechoux pushed the Privateers over the top. Dechoux outlasted Robin Alston in a first set tiebreak and coasted to a 6-1 second set. Alguacil came back from down 4-1 in the second to finish off a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Gilhespie came back from down a set to win her match as she dominated the third set tiebreak 10-2. The lone Tigers point came from Nina Zhang at flight two.
FROM THE COACH
"The team played well across the board. We're pleased and now we get ready for the weekend. They found a way and I'm proud of them."
"As coaches sometimes we have to come in and try to tell them to settle down and be patient. Recognize the opponents' weaknesses and take them outside their comfort zone. Lea and Claudette were great at making adjustments."
NEXT UP
The Privateers make the short trip to Hattiesburg to face Southern Miss (Saturday) and Florida A&M (Sunday).
