NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (5-4) dominated in all facets as they cruised to a 10-1 victory over the Tulane Green Wave (6-2) on Wednesday in Game One of the 2020 Pelican Cup at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Games two and three of the series will take place on Apr. 15 and 21 respectively with the Privateers needing one more win to secure the cup for a third straight year.
WIN-LOSS
Brandon Mitchell (2-0) pitched 5.2 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits in the win. The loss went to Chris Holcomb (0-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers' offensive onslaught began early on with four runs in the second. The first of three Tulane errors guided the first New Orleans run in.
Pearce Howard then followed with a double to left that plated two more. A sac fly immediately grew the lead to 4-0.
New Orleans added three more in the third with the big hit coming on a
Gaige Howard two-run double. The Privateers' offense continued to click as two more runs came home in the fourth on three hits.
Meanwhile, Mitchell pitched a strong game for the Privateers with 5.2 scoreless innings of work. He allowed three hits and two walks while he recorded three strikeouts.
Cristian Poche followed with 1.1 scoreless innings of his own. Poche has thrown 4.2 scoreless frames thus far this season out of the pen.
The final run came in the eighth when
Jamarian Crain's RBI single drove home
Salo Iza. Tulane scratched a run across in the ninth to avoid the shutout on a Parker Haskin RBI single.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
The Privateers' top three hitters in the order collected eight hits. Crain scored twice and went 3-for-5. Gaige and Pearce combined for five RBI.
Darren Willis went 3-for-5 with two runs. Iza was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Collin Kulivan threw a scoreless eighth inning.
Cortlynn Ramirez struck out two batters in the ninth.
NEXT UP
The Privateers begin the Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic series against UConn on Friday at Maestri Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
